I am a theoretical physicist and the head of the Machine Learning & Complex Systems Group at Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology.
My work sits at the intersection of theory and application in machine learning. On the theoretical side, I study how data, models, and training choices shape the behavior and biases of AI systems. On the applied side, I work on environmental challenges, including the monitoring of aquatic ecosystems and the assessment of ecological risk.
Beyond research, I am interested in the social role of science, its impact on labor and on human rights.
