Science and technology can dramatically improve peoples' living conditions. Yet, they are often used for oppression and to the advantage of the few. The result is a science that is biased and does not serve the purpose that I believe it should have: improving everyone's conditions. We must be aware of the systemic pressures that bias science (e.g. funding, publication, and career incentives) and work to counter them. We must be aware of the systemic mechanisms that render science an instrument of oppression (e.g. the military-industrial complex, the fossil fuel industry, and suppression of indigenous knowledge) and work to counter them.
